I've bought a used 1990 Accord that has a fairly reliable water leak in the
trunk during rainstorms. It seems to come in via the taillights. One in particular fills up almost like a fishbowl, and then when the trunk lid is opened it just drains out into the trunk. I can't find the origin of this leak. Suggestions? |

Can you see the water in the taillight assembly by looking from the outside?
This is common in Hondas of this vintage. Disassemble and replace the taillight assembly gaskets. Alternatively, disassemble, wash off gaskets, let dry, and caulk with silicone. The drawback to the silicone is that it's hard to clean off when you next need to replace/clean the gaskets. New gaskets can be purchased from various online sites. You should take your car immediately to a dealer. They are the only ones who
are experienced enough to be able to deal with this problem. Bill, have you googled and seen the number of people with Hondas with this
problem who have fixed it themselves? No problem if you yourself love dealers, but I think John might want to consider that Google search before he heads off to the dealer. "Bill B. Bill is probably a 'bot that some disturbed dealer had created to reply to
all the Honda self-help group postings. I figure it might also be some low-life that works not for any one dealer but
for Honda Incorporated. (This then makes Honda Inc. pretty low.) I'm glad someone else posted with Bill B. Johnson's name in the subject line pointing out his spam to all threads and not to believe it. Some folks may only check their own thread and might not be aware he's up to no good. I have seen this problem is two 92 Accords. After looking at the
taillights, the trunk gasket and the power antenna, I finally discovered that the water was getting in around the flow-through ventilation outlet. This is a rectangular plastic piece located just to the rear of the driver's side rear wheel well. After calking the perimeter with silicone sealant ( inside and out) the problem was solved. I don't know if the 90s are the same but it's worth a look. It's been a few years, but if I remember correctly, you have to remove the wheel well liner and the trunk liner to get at it.
