One thing to keep in mind is that the pricing on Edmunds is not always
correct, neither are the specials. I've seen them list several cases
where the manufacturer supposedly had both rebates and special
financing when it was really one or the other, and some times they
even had the invoices as much as a grand above or below reality. Then
again, it can be as much as 3 months behind in terms of what deals are
really running.

Just like anything else, you get what you pay for and Edmunds is free.
It is good for getting you into the ballpark though.

There are plenty of advertised deals on the LX models at around 18250-18500
around here. Problem is that Honda only offers ABS on the EX trim, which
would have required an extra $3-4K, we found at the dealers. Hey, I respect
strategic pricing, but when safety is at stake... not impressed by Honda's
decisions on the trim lines.

If you are spending the extra money for the ABS brakes, you are making a
decision based upon wrong assumptions. It has already been shown
statistically that ABS breaking systems are no more safer than traditional
breaking systems, because people place too much reliance on the ability of
ABS to shorten the stopping distance, which it won't do. I have never had
brake lockup become an issue in stopping, because I drive such that I see
what's ahead of me and break accordingly. Even under very occasional heavy
braking situations, neither my 99 Civic or 01 CRV LX have ever locked up
the brakes. If this were about air bags, then I'd sing a different tune.

Sure, and you could also make that same argument about AWD vs. FWD. It may
be more an emotional than a rational/economic decision, but I'd feel a lot
better with my family in a car with both AWD and ABS... for no extra money,
of course .

(My 94 Civic's ABS actually do chatter sometimes in slippery situations.
Can't honestly say they've ever prevented an accident, but I do like having
them.)

Well...its you money....and your right to spend it as you please. If those
features give you a sense of security, then have them, but you made your
comment based on safety...which is not factual. If you want to add more to
that, then only look at cars with traction control, which in my opinion
offers more safety capabilties than ABS. As far as AWD vs FWD, if you live
in an adverse climate that requires AWD capability, then I agree with you
wholeheartedly.
