Default problem on my 88 civic (please read)

I have an 88 civic (MT, hatch) and the car has been acting weird lastly.
This is what happens. Sometimes the check engine light comes on, and when it
is on, I can feel that I'm losing a lot or power, I step on the gas and it
hessitates, and then it hits the car, then, it runs poorly until I turn the
ignition off. Also, after having driven for about half hour, it's hard to
get it to start again.
After having the light on, and turn the ignition on, I start it, and the
light is gone.

I changed the fuel filter, but it was useless and the mechanic told me that
when you turn start it, it wasn't giving the right amount of amperes and
volts. This numbers stabilized later, though. He told me that it could be
the starter motor and that it was about 200 bucks for that.

Thanx for reading.

If the car looses power while running, the starter certainly is not the
cause. I believe the '88 Civic has 4 LEDs on the ECU that will indicate
diagnostic codes. The ECU is under the passenger seat, and the LEDs are
at the front of the ECU. Next time the car acts up, see if you can get
the diagnostic codes before turning off the ignition.
