Default Honda Accord 1987 - replacing PCV valve grommet

I need to replace the PCV valve for a 1987 Honda Accord. After pulling the
valve out I noticed that the grommet rubber is "baked", very brittle. The
old valve was loose in the grommet. Obviously, the grommet will need to be
replaced too, however, I'm concerned about little pieces falling inside the
PCV valve/grommet hole.

Any ideas how to best approach this?

Thanks,
MC

If I remember correctly, some Accords did not use a grommet. The pcv valve is
inserted into the end of the hose that comes up from the breather box.

You're absolutely correct. I thought it was a grommet but when I
started looking around found out it was a hose. Need to replace it
anyway as the top part broke off when I pulled the PCV valve off.
What's the best way to replace that hose? Will I need to take out the
intake manifold? There's not a lot of space to maneuver in there!

I don't think that you'll need to remove the intake manifold. However,
you'll likely have to go at it from the bottom with car jacked up.

Can't reach the clamp that connects the hose to the breather box as
the breather box gets in the way from the bottom. I can touch it, but
not maneuver with pliers to take it off. I took the oil filter out to
give me more room but it's almost an impossible proposition. None of
the mechanics I've talked to (and I did go to my local Honda dealer)
has ever done this type of job (replacing that hose).

I can't believe I'm going to have to take the engine out to replace a
PCV hose???????? Unbelievable!

Will unbolting the breather box help? Perhaps you can find a pair of
specialty pliers at http://www.snapon.com/ that will allow you to access the
clamp, e.g., http://tinyurl.com/qo2h. Also keep in mind that these are just
spring clamps. You may be able to just carefully pry the bottom of the hose
off of the breather box.

I forgot to mention that Sears offers a similar pair of pliers for a bit
less than Snap-On wants for them. http://tinyurl.com/qpx1

I was finally able to replace the hose! I was able to maneuver my way
from the top passenger side (had to remove a few hoses) and remove the
clamp. Then, from the bottom, I was able to remove the hose.

I had to remove the oil filter and one of the intake manifold
supports. The hose came out in pieces by breaking it off with a set
of pliers and a Phillips screwdriver. Installing the new hose was a
piece of cake compared to taking out the old one.

With the new valve in place I put everything back and was able to
start the engine. Now I need to adjust/test the idle speed, but that
another thread (which I'm going to be posting in a few minutes).

Thanks to all of you for your comments and suggestions.
