my father recently bought a 81 honda accord.the previous owner for some
reason, put a four barrel adapter on the 1.8 and had a holley 600 carb on
it. he threw away the original carb. the 600 is way too much carb.The car
runs like crap. my question is, what carbs will bolt directly to the factory
intake? we were noticing that the original replacement carbs are pretty
$$$$$$$$$$. we were thinking a 1 barrel or two barrel carb, but wern't sure
about needing an adapter or not. Also wondering what years of accord carbs
are interchangable. any help is much appreciated

The original carb is a three barrel. You NEED the third barrel for the cvcc
valves. A two barrel carb will likely never work correctly on this engine.
Probably your best option would be to pick up an original carb from a wrecking
yard (or someone parting out this model and year) and get it rebuilt. You could
also try calling around to some of the independent Honda shops in your area as
some shops keep old parts laying around. Note that you'll also need the
original carb base and any other missing parts.

You may be able to use a carb from an '80 but it's been too long since I've
dealt with these so I don't remember the exact differences.

I suggest that you visit the largest car junk yard in your area. You may
be able to find it in the yellow pages. They many have a wrecked 81 honda
accord and you could get the carb off of it for a low price. Make sure the
81 honda has the same type of transmission that you have in your car. If
they don't have one in stock, they may be able to get you one from another
junk dealer that has one. Most of the larger junk yards are now on their
own computer network and can get parts for just about any car from dealers
throughout America. Some dealers even offer free guarantees.
