Dear honda drivers,

i'm an owner of a 93 civic dx. I would like to put in electric windows, en
can buy a original honda set for a nice price. Onley without any cables.
Does anyone known if the made any preperation while building this car so
that later on electric windows can be easely build in? Is there any cable
work pre-instaled in my civic?

I would like to check it myself, but my doors are nicely isolated and i hate
the idea of getting this out for nothing!

On US Civics from that year Honda did not put in any provisions for
power windows unless the car came with power windows. Signals from the
car to the door go through a connector plugged in to the lower front
edge of the door. On trim levels with no power locks, no power windows
and no power mirrors this was a 2 pin connector with wires for the
speaker only. Next step up was models with power mirrors. Here there was
an 8 pin connector with 2 wires for speaker, 3 for mirror and 3 unused.
Cars with power windows and power locks (they came together) had a 25
pin connector (a lot of wires needed for the master switch in the
driver's door). Both front doors use the same type connector, and the
above applies to 2/3 door models as well as the front doors of 4 door
models. On 4 door models the rear doors had a 6 pin connector on cars
with power locks and windows and no connector at all otherwise.

If your car does have power mirrors, you could use the 3 spare positions
in the connector for your windows if you give up the convenience of
controlling both (all?) windows from the driver's door. The unused
position in the connectors do not have pins / sockets in them, so you
would have to get the extra pins/sockets (with wires attached) from the
junk yard.

If you want to use the master switch function you need to transplant a
25 pin connector into the driver's door. Passenger side needs to be 8 or
25, your choice. The 2, 8 and 25 pin connectors all fit in the same
opening in the door. The connectors are held in place with plastic tabs
so you need to reach inside the door to unsnap the tabs if you want to
unplug the connectors.

I replaced the stock 8 pin connector in the driver's door of my '94
hatchback with a 25 pin connector from a 4 door EX so that I could
install power locks. It was quite a job, and unless you are comfortable
with wiring (including crimping or soldering to splice wires) it would
be a very painful exercise.

If you just want to find out what type connector you have, you can
remove the speaker from the driver's door (the grill pulls right off,
the speaker is mounted with 3 screws), then remove the plastic "cup"
that the speaker sits in. Now you can reach in and compress the tabs on
the connector so that you can unplug it by pulling at hte connector on
the out side of the edge of the door.

Dirk,
It would be a lot of trouble and very expensive. I advise you to consider
trading it in on a newer civic that already has power windows. I believe
that all of the EX Civics have power windows. If you get a used one--get a
car fax on it. If it was involved in an accident, don't buy it. I had a
friend who purchased a used car that had a bent frame as a result of an
accident. It cost him lots of money in tires.
