Default Repairing fold away mirrors

On an older Rover (1999 623SLi) which is really a Rover badged accord
with Honda engine, running gear etc, is it possible to separate the two
halves of the wing mirror without smashing the unit open or breaking the
mirror glass? There must be a way, but it's not obvious.
