Default New Accord "Econ" button

I worked up my courage today and pressed the big green button for the
first time.

Nothing happened. I was hoping my gas tank would automatically refill
or something.

I pressed it again. Still nothing.

I pressed it one more time and looked carefully around the dash, and
behind the upper-left quadrant of the steering wheel finally noticed
that a marijuana leaf had lit up on the dashboard.

I looked in the ash tray, but did not find a joint had appeared.

Is that really all the button does, tell the driver to mellow out? Or
does it engage a cheetos-burning engine mode?

File a class action lawsuit.

I believe that it just changes the shift points so it shifts to a higher
gear earlier. So you sacrifice power for fuel economy. It allows the
manufacturer to achieve higher EPA MPG ratings while still offering a
vehicle with good acceleration when Econ is off.

On manual transmission vehicles it's bad to shift to a higher gear to
early because it makes the engine lug, but on an automatic or a CVT I'm
not sure if there's anything bad about leaving the Econ mode engaged.

I think that's backwards, it retards the upshift, and also governs how
fast the throttle "opens" (injectors don't exactly open, but
whatever).

My first take on it is that it helps a little in driving about town,
but my recent commute has taken me deep into gridlock every day, and
if anything it seems to be hurting mileage there.

I detect a lack of engineering maturity in the tuning of this engine
transmission system, it works great in very narrow ranges and poorly
in between. I mean the car is driveable but the mileage falls off
dramatically.

Has Honda ever updated their engine computers as part of standard
maintenance? Given another year, I'd expect them to do better.

because, of course, your shiny new $30,000 toy came with absolutely no
owner's manual whatsoever.

Or if it did, it's still in its original shrinkwrap--because after all,
you know how to drive. Why would you need to read up on the details of
the second largest single purchase in your life?

Honda is famous for their poor transmissions.

they are now. they never used to be.

[cue elmo's rant on odyssey transmissions. particularly when i mention
that a friend of mine has had his replaced 4 - yes, FOUR times, and that
4th one is currently acting up. the vehicle has 76k miles on it. he
has 3 kids and drives to tahoe from san fran. honda apparently never
considered such usage.]

Strangely enough, I opened the book and it did NOT say, "A marijuana
leaf lights up on your dashboard and your car slows down, have a nice
day, dude."
