Hello Dave,
I am also having the same problem with my honda accord 1997. I was wondering if you find solution to that problem. If yes can you please share with me that information.

Try swapping stereos one cheap option is having a friend with a similar year accord swap the streos and see if it does the same thing. Usually it's a back sound card inside the stereo that goes bad so only option switch out the stereo with another unit
