Default Honda Civic Fuel Mileage

A friend recently purchased a new Honda Civic coupe (not the SI) with an automatic transmission and is getting only 31 mpg, highway. The car has 7000 miles so should be providing closer to the advertised 40 mpg. The car is a commuter car that travels about 70 miles per day on the freeway.

Are other owners of the new Civic getting better gasoline mileage?

Thanks,

- Russ in Santa Barbara

I just got a new Civic EX with automatic transmission, and I'll be watching
the gas consumption closely, as many people are these days. I'll post my
results here when I have some significant numbers--I only have about 100
miles on the car now, and most of it's been city driving.

After about 800 miles I have to say I have never been so disappointed in a
car purchase as I am with my 06 Civic EX. I do get 40mpg but ONLY on open
freeways with the air conditioner turned off. Once the air goes on, my
mileage seems to drop to about 28mpg. If I drive in traffic with the air on,
I am lucky to get 26. I HOPE things improve as the car breaks in some more,
but I am rapidly losing hope of that happeneing.

I bought his car by trading in an 05 Accord which consistently got between
28 and 33 or so. I couldn't take the gas prices anymore (about $3.35 here in
Southern California). So I was willing to go with a slight step down in car
to achieve a bit better mileage. WHAT a disappointment!!

I have an '04 Hybrid CVT. I find that I get BETTER than EPA at 50 mph,
but only 75% of EPA at 65mph. Try slowing down from 65 (or higher) on
the freeway to 55, and watch your mileage go up dramatically.

I just bought an 07 Civic Sedan and am very disappointed in the
mileage. Manufacturers need to be forced to give more honest
appraisals of mileage. I thought I'd be getting close to 29mpg city
driving, but am only getting about 20 and that's without a.c. on!

I have not taken it out for a long freeway or highway drive, yet, but
I expect it to be equally disapppointing.

Other than this, I love my new Civic, though.
