There is a gray plastic plug (female) to the left of the main console,
basically hidden unless you get down on your hands and knees. It is circled
in red in the picture shown here:

Can anyone tell me what this plug is for?

It could be where the OBD unit is plugged in.

It is where you (or your service people) plug in the OBDII Reader.

That is also the standard location for OBDII connectors in all equipped
vehicles. If the connector isn't there, there is supposed to be a label
saying where it is located.
