Default Accord '97 air bag repairs-why?

In my 1997 Honda Accord (only 64,000K miles!), the driver's air bag required
repair about 5 months ago and now the passenger's air bag will require
repair. Neither air bag has ever been deployed. The repairs have been/will
be expensive!

I am wondering why the air bags went bad. The only serious hit was a low
speed 15-20 mph accident, in which the car was hit from behind and pushed
into the car in front. This was about 2 years ago and no air bag lights
showed at the time and the air bags did not deploy. No one was injured. The
front and rear damage was repaired by the insurance company.

Could the accident have caused some occult damage to air bag sensors that
did not become manifest until now, 2 years later? Has this ever been heard
of by others? If so, how would one convince an insurance company?

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Explain why you think the air bags require service now, and what are the
codes, if found? Who diagnosed the new 'faults'?

'cruly'

In both cases the SRS light came on and the Honda dealer did diagnostics on
the computer.

You said your airbags went bad? I have not hear of that happening before.
You said your pass side air bag requires repair? Airbags don't get repaired
they get replaced. I caution to you use the exact language necessary to
explain your situation and select your words wisely if you want to get the
correct help here.

Well to be more accurate: 1) early 2004 srs light-->diagnostics--> the
driver's air bag control unit required replacement several months ago; 2)
August 2004 srs light again -->diagnostics--> was told the passenger's air
bag itself requires replacement. Is that exact enough. I don't know enough
about air bag systems to be more specific than this. No air bag ever
deployed. The Accord is 1997. How often do air bag systems or components
require replacement when the bags have not deployed? The repairs are quite
expensive.

Thanks.
