I'm considering buying a 2004 honda civic hybrid with 124K miles offered at $5K. The price seems right, but I don't know much about Hondas and I'm concerned about the high mileage. Are there any other issues I should consider?

$4450 sounds pretty cheap for a low mileage 2004 Element, even if it's a 2wd DX model. I'd be a little suspicious. Make sure you check it out carefully, even things you might take for granted. For instance, make sure you get heat out of all of the dash vents. Otherwise it may have a plugged heater core even though the temp gauge is in the normal range...a $1200 repair.

First thing besides those would be a manual trans, however you could slap a b16a in that car for a reasonable price. Sure it isn't the fastest (not slow either 160hp and 111tq in a 1st gen) honda motor but best bang for the buck and very reliable, this would be a huge improvement. As far as cheap mods, other than the ones listed, you pretty much covered those with intake, header and exhaust. You could get a new cam and cam gear.
