Default Honda CRV on CNG & can rear axel removal helps for better mileage

Dear All,
Has anyone added CNG kit to 2004 Honda CRV? what mileage it gives for price of one liter (Rs63) with CNG in?
How much it costs to add CNG kit & what make is the best CNG make for CRV?.
Has anyone removed the rear axel of CRV to give more mileage (just to drive on front wheels), what's the overall impact & effect? Is it advisable & safe ?
Appreciate the response where your answer will help many proud CRVians...
Regards,
Sunny.

Default Re: Honda CRV on CNG & can rear axel removal helps for better mileage

SunnyPune,

It may be possible to have a CNG (compressed natural gas) kit installed on your CR-V. Certain companies, like Ford and Chrysler, do have aftermarket shops that install such kits. I have a friend that has such a kit installed on his Ford F-150.

Converting to CNG may be attractive - natural gas is a lot less expensive than gasoline (according to the Department of Energy, the "equivalent" cost of natural gas is about $2.00). And natural gas burns a lot cleaner than gasoline too.

But there are huge drawbacks. First, natural gas cannot be liquified so it needs a huge tank. On a CR-V I don't see any place to put a tank - you cannot install the tank inside your CR-V! Two, driving range will be much shorter than gasoline; I'm guessing about 120 miles per tank on CNG. you can get a home unit which allows you to fill up at home if your home has a natural gas hookup installed. Three, the cost to do all this will be high, probably much more than your CR-V is worth

Disconnecting the rear axle is possible to extend range, after all the CR-V is available in a two wheel drive version. But you will not get much more fuel mileage from this act.

Bottom line is that a CNG powered vehicle is not practical for most of us. If you just set on having a CNG powered car Honda does make the natural gas powered Civic and has done so for several years. Finding a used one should not be a problem.

Good Luck
