Typically, they are electronic although you should confirm that with the
service manual. Honda is not likely to provide you with the schematic for
the speedometer, so you'll have to pull it out and reverse-engineer it. If
you have lived a pure and wholesome life, you'll find a set of switches or
jumpers in there clearly marked with the divider values. Often the design
engineers build in some adjustability for the various tire sizes likely to
be delivered with the vehicle.

On another point, as Joe Sixpack points out, your readings are off more than
the usual amount of a few miles per hour. Is that normal for that model? If
possible, find another vehicle identical to yours and determine whether
_that_ vehicle is off as much. I suspect that yours has another problem.
Usually there are magnets on the drive shaft that pass a reed switch. As the
drive shaft turns, a series of electrical pulses is sent to the speedometer
which counts them and converts that number into miles per hour. Perhaps one
of the magnets is missing or not quite in the right position. Perhaps the
switch or sensor is askew. Maybe there is a defect in the speedometer so
that it is missing some of the incoming pulses.

It wouldn't hurt to confirm the speedometer reading with a measured mile. I
went so far as to borrow a police radar gun to verify my speedometer. If the
GPS, the stopwatch and the radar agree, look at the pulse circuitry.
> > Hi,
> > My speedo and odo are dead the majority of the time. Problem started
> > shortly after I bought this car, was intermittent work/no work. Now
> > mainly doesn't work. Speedo bounces around 20 mph at all speeds. Every
> > once in a while it will take off and track with my speed but then
> > stops and returns to bounce around 20mph. Tach has always continued to

I had an opportunity to buy a 2003 Civic LX with 81k miles on it
several weeks ago at a great price, and I did. At the time of
purchase, one of the door locks did not work, and the SRS indicator
light was on. I fixed the door lock easily, replacing the lock's
cylinder plates etc. Then I started on the SRS system. The title is
clean and there were no indications of an accident. I researched a lot
on the internet and with shop manuals (free at my public library along
with bits and pieces posted at various web site). I made some tools
for a few dollars to re-set the SRS memory and read the SRS code being
thrown. I re-set the SRS memory often while I was figuring out how to
read codes on the cheap. Once I got my tools together and figured out
what two connectors I needed to find under the dash for (1) re-setting
the SRS memory and (2) reading codes, things became easy.

Only one code was being thrown, Code 9-3. This is for a faulty
driver's seat belt buckle switch. Knowing the code and so thinking
this would very likely be covered under Honda's lifetime seat belt
warranty, I reported to my dealer. My dealer reads codes for free, but
subsequent repairs may not be. My dealer was great: The service
department read the code, assured me the repair was covered under
warranty, and ordered the part. Less than two days I was driving home
with the new seat belt buckle installed. I asked to keep the old
buckle (for tinkering, ya know) but the dealer said they needed to
turn it over to Honda as part of the warranty procedure.

One of the Service Department fellows said his understanding is that
this seat belt buckle switch wears /by design/ so people do come in
periodically [every several years] to get a new seat belt buckle. The
idea being it preserves the integrity of the seat belt as a restraint
and so saves Honda from lawsuits. I do not know if this is true or
not. Since I had an experience with my 1991 Civic's seat belt in 2001
or so and the dealer fixed it without question, it seems to me that
the lifetime seat belt warranty is something Honda seems to hold
sacred.

From reading on the net, SRS light problems seem to come up a lot with
this generation. Here is my writeup on what I did:
I've wondered about that myself.
There's zero difference between the factory one and the OEM replacement.
>> Does any one know if Haynes or Chilton or whomever have a manual for
>> 2009 Civics?
>> I looked online and did not see anything.
>>
>
>
>You won't see anything for a few years yet.
>
>And when you do, it will be as crappy as any other Haynes/Chilton.
>
>If all you want to do is figure out where your oil filter is, then go for
>the aftermarket stuff. If you will eventually be doing more complex work on
>your car, bite the bullet and get the real ($400) thing from the Honda
>dealer.

I had Chilton that I bought for my 96 Civic. And one I bought for my
72 MGB (both went with the cars). Want to work on the bores? Grab
just about any Chilton. Instructions were word for word. And almost
the same picture, unless you were looking at a very specific part.

>
>Factory Honda shop manuals are of sparkling quality, containing information
>the aftermarket can only dream of.

But, if you are carrying it in the car, try to keep it low and
centered to avoid upsetting the balance too much. I think my Fit
manual may weigh more than the Fit.

Drinking game. Every time you see "may cause serious injury or death"
take a shot. But only do this two chapters a night.
I think my Prelude mounting is similar to your Accord configuration. You
have to unfasten the plate from the floorboard and turn it over to get
access to the mounting bolts. They thread into the nuts that you see. It
helps to disconnect some of the cables that attach to the transmission
control computer and the engine control computer. Getting the plate and the
computers out takes some contortion. Once it's out of the car you'll have
easy access to the four mounting bolts of the TCU.
>
>
>Heh. Now that I think about it...
>
>When I disabled the SRS in our Tercel I didn't pull any fuses. I simply
>unplugged the SRS computer (two bright-yellow connectors), which
>accomplished exactly what I wanted and also turned the light off. This
>required disassembling the center console.

Of course, all of this is done after pulling the battery. If not, I
recommend resting your chin on the steering wheel. Cure certain
population issues.

Not you, Tegger!!!
