Acura newbie looking at used TLs and am considering 2 high mileage TLs
mecahnically sound and in mint condition. The cars have 171k (w/ Nav) and 182k and are both about $6800. Would like some feedback from the newsgroup about experiences with high mileage TLs. Thanks in advance! |

Should have mentioned both are '99s. |

Do the transmissions have any weirdness in behavior? There have been issues with transmissions in the '00 and newer TLs that use the 5 speed transmission, less problems with the 4-speed in the '99s, but it something you should pay particular attention to. Beyond that, just look for the same things you look for in any high mileage used car - do all the gadgets work? Any evidence of abuse/accidents, etc.? |

If transmission hasn't been replaced it might need to be, the engine could even go. If it was 1 owner with perfect service records it might be OK. Even so that is a lot of miles. <I took the RSB Pledge - 2002> |

Really old cars would have seals, belts, and hoses degrading from age and climate cycles. Cars driven a lot of highway miles get less wear on them than stop-n-go driven cars. Transmissions shift less, brakes used less. Engines get up to operating temperatures resulting is less wear than lots of short trips. It also would depend on where the car was used;in salty climes, perhaps? Also beware of "flood cars". Since the recent weather problems, there are a lot of them that will be turning up for sale. They may look mint, but are loads of trouble. -- Jim Yanik jyanik at kua.net |

If the cars are cherry, and you just need a few miles a day around town, then, well, maybe. Otherwise, I'd go back and try to get something well under 100k miles, even if it was a few years older. You do realize, that $6800 is nearly enough to lease a *new* Accord LX for three years? J. |
