Default Transmission Fluid

Since 1993 wneh I purchased my 92 Vigor, I've always used Castrol DexronIII /
Mercon trans fluid and
recently, I had a very hard time finding some. One NAPA store said they can't
even get it from their warehouse. What's the story with this?. I've been
drilling thru the web finding that there's been new fluids introduced and the
reports have the usual fuzzification about applications. Does anyone know the
background of this and which of todays trans fluids are interchangable with
Dexron III?

thx
