Default Erratic Rpm's

'85 Integra 1600 dohc 5spd 200,000k
Sometimes (twice a week maybe) the tacho starts bouncing around while
driving and i can hear a slight rattle sound under the bonnet, guessing
somewhere in the engine. any ideas?
also the idle speed is around 2000 while cold and 1200 when warm, ive owned
another car with excactly the same engine which idled at 700
and a whistling sound while driving in 5th gear, could it just need gearbox
oil?

Regarding the erratic engine speeds, this can be caused by air bubbles in
the coolant passages. There is a bleeder valve at the housing where the
upper radiator hose connects to the engine. Loosen this valve only a little
bit while the engine is relatively cool. Only open it enough to allow
coolant/air to escape. When you get a steady stream of coolant, close the
valve and tighten it down. Hard to say what would case the rattling. Only
thought I have is that something is loose and the engine vibrates just
enough at a certain speed to cause the loose part to rattle around. Another
possibility for the erratic idle is a vacuum leak. Those are a PITA to track
down. Most effective way I know of is to hunt around with an UNLIT propane
torch while the engine is running. When you pass the torch over the leak,
the engine will speed up.

Good Luck!

My daughter's '93 Accord rattles for a second or two when the throttle is
lifted if the coolant is low - cavitation in the water pump, I assume. The
sound is actually a scary squall, a lot like a bad bearing. But adding
coolant makes it go away. (Oddly, I can't find a bleeder on her engine.)
