Default On my 4th...

'99 TL:

The original transmission was slipping, so the dealer replaced it. The
second transmission slipped worse than the original did, so the dealer
replaced it.

As I was pulling out of my driveway, the third transmission slipped so bad I
had to rev the engine to 3000 rpm before the car would move. I was driving
down the street and the transmission made a "clunk" and drove fine, as if
something was frozen (it was 30 degrees this morning, but that would have
nothing to do with it). I drove the car about 20 miles and the check engine
and TCS lights came on. I pulled to the side, and I found nothing visibly
wrong. I started the car again and both lights came on. I drove another 10
miles to get on the highway. About 1 mile on the highway, after getting the
car to 75 mph, the transmission couldn't find a gear. It downshifted so far
that the engine revved to about 6500 rpm, then it would upshift and drop it
to about 1500 rpm. It rapidly cycled like this so much that I now have
concern about my engine. At the same time, the cabin filled with a lovely
white smoke and a burning oil smell. As I pulled to the side, I looked at
the lady's car that was behind me, and noticed that it had a nice shiny oily
look to the front end. The transmission blew oil all over the underside of
my car and gave the lady behind me a nice oil bath.

I'm almost afraid to pick my car up when they fix it this time. I'd like to
trade it in, but IMHO the new TL's, TSX's, and RSX's suck. Maybe an RL is in
my future, or a new 350Z. I'm losing faith in Acura.

Quite a story.

I'm not quite a year into an Accord, after driving a CL through its
warranty.

All I can say is that, when this Accord reaches the end of lease and
warranty in two years, if Honda hasn't fixed the transmission problems
100%, I'll have to shift over to Toyota, or something.

(Hey, why doesn't Honda simply feature their manual trannies more?
They still make excellent manuals, don't they? I was all ready to get
the stick with my Accord, but it was to much hassle trying to locate
one. Yeah, I know, 90% of American buyers want the auto, especially on
the luxury marques, and why not?)

Scary... According to my manufacturing certificate, the ONLY part in
my 04 TL made in Japan is the tranny.

Be careful of the new '05 RL, they've gone to a 5 spd. auto will AWD
capability! The old 4 spd. auto. in the 2000~04 RL were Japanese made
trannies. No problems with those, I've got a '02 RL that's a great car.
The '05's,.......who knows?

My 1999 CL had the four speed auto, and it had problems, reported by
someone else on this newsgroup too a couple of weeks ago.

For those people that have had so many transmission problems, I'm
curious. Do you play with the sport shift a lot, or not. Also, would
you say you drive your car hard, or normal?

My tranny just started slipping at 44K. I hardly ever use the manual shift
feature. I certainly don't baby the car but no smoky burnouts for me. This
simply should not happen. It's a sin, I love the car but a tranny problem
that can't be fixed? What was Honda thinking?

The 1999 did not have sport shift.

I did not drive it hard at all, didn't want to, for one thing, and
couldn't, really, with the way the tranny worked. The problems are
most evident when you're cruising at low RPM and then need even 50%
power for a few seconds to change lanes - that's not "hard" by any
means, though I suppose Grandma might not ever do even that much.

Hmmmm. I'm also wondering if most of the bad trannies are in the US,
or do we have them up in Canada, too?

Both Acura dealers in my region have said they have changed barely any
with the recall. Of course, they could be lying.
