Default Pls. recommend oil weight for '91 Integra

A couple of mechanics suggested to me to start using a heavier oil weight in
my '91 Teg with about 94K miles on it.

I am not sure what weight oil to ask for when I get it changed or when I
need to add more between changes. Can someone recommend?

TIA

Where are you located?

What are the winter temps?

Does the car use any oil?

Located in Los Angeles

Never freezes here. Around 50F in winter.

Yes it does. I have to put in a quart every 1500 - 2000 miles. Mechanic sees
some slow leaks in the seal and around the oil pan. No drips on the ground.
I don't notice any smoke in the exhaust but I suppose it may be burning a
little.

I've used 5w-30 full synthetic in my '91 'Teg RS (and 10w-30 in the
manual trans) since I bought the car (86K ago). NO oil blowby. Did have a
leak about 5 years ago in the valve cover gasket. Its a sensitive part you
might want them to check. Cheers!

I would check your owner's manual, but if it were me, I would go with
a high mileage 10W30 oil, such as Castrol GTX high mileage. Run that
awhile and see how it does. Honestly, a quart every 3,000 miles is
not that bad.

If you needed to, you could always try a 10W40 or 20W50.

Yeah, I had the valve cover gasket replaced about 2 years ago. Oil was
getting in one of the spark plugs. I was hoping that would reduce the amount
of oil that was getting used. However it did not really seem to.

I bought the car used several years ago from a dealer and it did not come
with an owner's manual. I am using 2x the amount you say. About a qt. every
1,500 miles. This has been going on for a few years now. One mechanic
replaced the valve cover gasket. After that he said he could not see a leak.
Another mechanic said he saw a leak in the seal and the oil pan but advised
me to just keep putting in oil rather than fixing it. I guess I need a 3rd
opinion.

Most manufacturer's state 1 quart every 1000 miles is "normal"
.....while most vehicles don't use that kind of oil, it is within
reason.

Since you live in LA, I would probably try Castrol GTX 10W40 high
mileage and see how it does.

BTW, I don't work for Castrol, but on bobistheoilguy.com, their GTX
and Sytec blend products show good used oil analyses.

A high mileage oil, such as Castrol GTX High Mileage or Pennzoil High
Mileage, is formulated using a combination of premium base oils and
semi-synthetic components to offer some protection against oil
burn-off. This oil also contains seal conditioners that reduce
leakage, and additives that provide protection against engine wear and
deposits that reduce compression.

Worth a shot.
