Sounds like you bought the wrong car. My Japan built '98 TL has been perfect,
but I when I get around to replacing it several years from now, I will probably
go with Lexus. Sad... :-(

Could be worse though, you could be driving an Olds Silhouette minivan. Don't
ask!

Enjoy,

I am starting to wish I bought a Hyundai instead of a CLS by reading about
such problems! Remember when Honda used to produce a transmission that had
only 4 speeds forward, shifted noticeably, and ran fine with 300K+ on it?

I talked to an Acura maintenance manager about the issues and they appear to
be of two types. First is that multiple friction materials are engaged at
once in any "American feel" tranny which causes very smooth shifting at the
expense of wearing the friction material. Maybe dropping the pan often and
flushing helps? Seems that the gunk can find its way into any number of bad
places causing various symptoms. Trannys on CL's TL, etc. (> 005203 as last
6 of VIN # on '03 CLS) have parts with new coatings on clutches, and
possibly a different reaction control solenoid. I would hope these are on
the latest model replacements as well.
Other problem is the latest recall which is some sort of secondary gear
overheating and loosing temper to lack of lube at low loads (i.e. 4%
continuous grade & speed at < 1/4 throttle. Notice about oil injector add
on / gear color inspection due out by 9-04.
I don't know about you, but I don't like the extra forward gear, even
~without~ my personal perceived lack of quality due to extra complexity for
an extra .2 mpg.
Now I see other manufacturers talking about 6 speeds and even D-Chrysler
with a 7 speed! F!
