Default New Tires

my 2004 TL came with 235/45/17 Turanza EL42 tires. looking at tirerack.com
these tires are some crappy tires.

2 questions for the group

1) i want slightly wider tires 255/40/17, these are exactly 20mm wider
(almost 1" wider) and 0.3" less tall on the rim, will these fit ok on this
car (width wise is my concern)??
2) i have a winter truck, so i want to replace the Turanza's with a very
good summer/touring tire that has the best balance of dry/wet traction,
tread life, and smooth ride.

i know no one tire can do it all, but for those of you who have used many
tires before, what brand/model of tire would you recommend?

thanks,
k
