Default Maint Req'd light - based solely on odometer, or is there a self-test?

Hi -- I have a 2003 RSX. I have read in the Owner's Manual about how to
reset the Maint Req'd light.

The Owner's Manual implies that the light's operation is based solely on
mileage -- that there is no real "self test" behind the scenes that is
checking oil pressure, coolant, etc. Is this true?

A few weeks ago I had the 10K mile maintenance done when my RSX was at about
about 9500 miles. Recently, however, I noticed that the Maint Req'd light
was blinking a few times more when I started the car. This morning it began
to stay lit continuously. I figure that one possibility is that the dealer
forgot to reset the light then they did the 10K maintenance. The car seems
to be driving great. (Current mileage is 13.5K.)

My main question here: is the Maint Req'd light basically the "idiot light"
of auto lore, with no real function other than to alert you to the fact that
your mileage has reached a certain point? Or, is there real testing going
on? If the latter is the case then I wonder if I should take the car in for
a once-over. Driving this morning with the Maint Req'd light lit did not
reveal anything different in terms of noises, responsiveness, or feel.

Thanks!
