Default Shift Gate in MDX

Does anyone know the reason or benefits of the offset back and forth shift
gate in the MDX as compared to the straight up and down shift arrangement on
most automatic transmissions?
Thanks.

Maybe so you have to make a conscious decision to shift into a particular
gear and not accidentally knock the shift to another gear. Personally I
like the look.

the shift gate makes perfect sense in an auto-stick
like the TL, so you can shift manualy without confusion.
also no button.

but can be a nuisance otherwise, like when you try to throw
it back in park and push straight up to R without moving around
it. takes some getting used to.
