They usually don't need it, and if they do, replacement is a better option. Turned rotors don't last long. |

I have had Honda cars and Acuras for nearly 20 years, I have never replaced
read disc brakes on any of them. I had a 1985 prelude for 8 years; a 1993 Prelude for 9 years; 1997 NSX (still have); 2004 TL (still have); The front brakes do 80% of the braking and proportionately the wear. There is either something wrong with your brakes, or the repair shop is trying to make enough money for their next boat payment at your expense. If they really need replaced (I would get a second opinion from a reputable repair shop), then I would ask Acura to pay for the replacement. The rear brakes should last at least 60,000 miles. That's odd. You should have to replace the fronts every 30k or so, not the
rears. Unless your parking brake is dragging or engaged, your rears shouldnt be in need of replacement for quite some time. Make sure the rear wheels spin freely when off the ground. Don't turn the rotors unless they need to be turned (and even then replacement is a better option). if you don't feel pulsating while braking, then they are fine. Stock pads will be fine. It depends which model car. He doesn't say. On the bigger Hondas/Acuras,
the fronts wear first (but more like 60k, not 30), but the Integras are known for going through a couple sets of rear pads before the fronts wear down. I get about 45K on a set of fronts and 90K on a set of rears on my 90 Legend. 30K on the rears is very short unless the parking brake was left on or something else odd happened. It is even stranger that the rotors should require turning. Were they warped or was the surface damaged? |

oh man. same responses all around.
i have it serviced by the acura dealer which has done a good job so far. i do mostly highway and have almost never used the parking brake. my experience was that front always wear before rear. regardless if its pads or boots. but on my recent invoice it says "rear brake pads very close to wear tab. needs now." should this be covered under defective materials? i don't mind turning the rotors every 30k just to even them out. however, i don't have any unusual vibes, noise, or mushy pedal. total estimate is only $135 incl labor, which i think is low. 03TL-S "Natman" <natmanREMOVE@gosfgiants.com> wrote in message news:40869d33.3116661@netnews.comcast.net... > On Tue, 20 Apr 2004 20:01:40 -0400, "tomk" <tomk@nomail.com> wrote: > > >30k mile oil change today. they say i need rear disk pads. > >do they wear before the front? should i do stock or is there > >a stonger pad that will work with these rotors(no noise please)? > >rotors will be turned also. > > > >03TL-S > > > > > In *most* cars the fronts wear first. Goes under the normal wear provision in ever auto warranty I have ever seen. Don't see why you want to turn the rotors. Most good mechanics these days advise against it. The new pads will seat to the rotors. $135 sounds like they are not turning the rotors. Do you live in a state that has safety inspections? If you have an 03 it should be needing one soon. If so they will tell you about the breaks. If you had one within the last few months and the inspector did not mention the breaks I would not worry. Know any good independent mechanics? If so, have one check it out. |
