My '99 TL right front brake squeals when I apply the breaks at low speed. I
thought that was the signal to replace the brake pads, but when I removed the pads, they're suprisingly just over half worn. There's considerabe life left in all the pads. The car has about 73K miles on it. Any idea what causes the squeals? Also, at low speed, the steering wheel shakes a little when braking. What do these symptoms indicate? |

Get the rotors turned or replaced to eliminate the shake.
The squeal could be something simple or plain annoying depending on how persistent the squeal is. Sometimes a little bit of brake quiet gooo on the OUTSIDE of the pads will help, sometimes you need new brake shims and or brake pads. When changing my own pads, I often find a film of high temperature grease on
the back of the pads. I always replace the grease with Permatex "Anti-Seize", as at least one of it's purposes is to block the transmission of high frequency energy. My dealer uses a similar grease or a silicon compound on the pads and shims to stop squeaking.
