Dear all:
My buddy's 91 LS legend with 315k miles has recently been leaking power steering fluid. A year and half ago, the car was diagnosed with a bad steering joint (I forget the name of the joint--I think it is something like a wiggle joint). The steering sometimes makes a clicking sound. He's put Lucas thick power st. fluid in there, but the level is still going down. Short of having the joint fix, what else could be done? One thought he has is just keep on refilling the power steering. It may be more economical than paying a whole bunch of money to fix the thing. The car does have 315k miles on it, so even though the engine is still running like a champion, he is not sure how much money he still wants to put into the car. Any suggestions? We are hoping the lucas is going to be able to stop the leakage. I suggested that he goes to Costco and buy a 50 gal drum of power steering for a low price and just keep refilling. :-) Just a thought that i had. any input would be appreciated. |

That's quite a lot of miles. Check exactly where it's leaking. Sometimes
it's as simple as a hose connection that needs a new clamp. If it's the rack & pinion, you are looking at 400-500$ for a rebuilt one installed. And unless the car is a complete piece of crap(ready to be retired to the junkyard),it's probably well worth it to have it fixed properly. -- Jim Yanik jyanik-at-kua.net |

Acura only wants Honda Brand power steering fluid in there - I think for the seals (which are probably all shot). My 89 Legend leaks fluid too, but not enough to replace the assembly. Only 257000 on it. Doug |
