Default '04 Acura TL vibrates and shakes?

I have read 3 reviews in which the owners complain about the 04' TL, stating
that it "vibrates quite a bit" at just over 50 mph. Someone stated that the
engine "ratlles worse than my Honda at 100,000 miles."

One person writes, "Most Automatics have strong vibrations when you are
driving at around 52 mph speed. Although you may not stay at these speeds
for too long, but a lot of times the traffic conditions may force you to
stay at this speed and that is when you can feel the whole engine and
transmission vibrating. Have tried to get this problem resolved but the
dealers have given up and have been told by Acura that this is how the car
is designed and that I will have to live with it!!!"

Has anybody experienced any of this or heard about these problems? I would
have thought that quality control at Honda would catch flaws as big as this.

I am about to plunk down my hard-earned cash on a car, and sure would like
to avoid a terrible mistake. I'll be grateful for any help I can get here.

TIA

Andrew

This sounds very odd.

I just got the 04 Accord EX, a 4 cylinder version of the same chassis
that makes up the TL. The powertrain design seeks super-low RPMs at
all times, so any vibration I would expect to come from somewhere
else.

I've had some minor questions about roughness in the ride over some
kinds of road and tarstrips at speed, but the car seems to be getting
smoother as it is broken in, or maybe I'm just getting used to it.

There might be a very narrow speed range where the powertrain is
unhappy, but unless you're going for miles at exactly that one speed,
I wouldn't expect it to be a noticeable problem.

J.

If you go to this forum http://www.acura-tsx.com/ they have a SPECIFIC
section for TL and believe me all your questions will be answered

I have a 2004 TL. It doesn't have the vibration issue you
mention. However, I've heard that a number of people on the
board I frequent (http://www.acura-tl.com/) have discussed the
issues involved. I believe that most of those with the issue
attribute the source to the very poor Bridgestone Turanza EL42
tires that Acura has chosen for the TL. They have a very bad
'flatspotting' problem -- especially when cold -- due to the
nylon Bridgestone used when making the tires. They also have
very poor wet and snow handling characteristics. Check out these
tires (and comparison models) at http://www.tirerack.com/

Some of those with the issue have been able to have the dealer or
the regional Acura reps swap their tires out with something
without the problems.

Again, I don't have the issue. BUT, after driving the tires in
the snow a few times, I'm swapping them at my local tire dealer
for a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires later this week.

Hope this helps!

I just purchased a 2001 Acura TL and it doesn't vibrate at all; as a
matter of fact, it has one of the smoothest rides of any car I have
ever owned. I hope you find the cause of this, it does not sound
normal to me at all. I wish I could be of more help to you.

Good Luck

Thanks all for your thoughtful replies and for pointing me to some
terrific resources.

Best,

I have owned my 2004 TL automatic since mid-October. Within the last few
days, I noticed the exact same vibration that is described in this posting.
Because the car did not exhibit this problem until recently, I have to
believe it is the tires. It appears to be a resonance that occurs at a
specific frequency.

I will pay attention to the speed tomorrow when I drive the car. I think it
is at about 50 mph, but I never noted the exact speed.

Cold weather is not an issue as I live in Santa Barbara and our coldest
weather is in the 40s, but it always warms to at least the 60s during the
day.

It's interesting that some owners have been able to get the dealer to
replace the tires. I wonder how difficult a challenge that is to
accomplish.
