Default Tming belt question

I have a 2000 Integra, 1.8 litre.
My manual says the timing belt needs to be changed at 160,000 km .
Every Honda product I have ever owned calls for the belt to be changed at
100 km.
Have the belts improved? Does 160,000 km seem safe?

The shop manual for my 96 Integra says every 144,000 km.
I would expect that as engineers gain experience with given engines
and material strengths they might adjust their maintenance intervals.
Or perhaps ther has been an improvement in belt technology.

I think they switched to a improved or reinforced belt on the newer
models.. Even after 90k miles/6 yrs, I've found the belts are usually
still in good shape on the 96 era stuff, but why risk it?

My mechanic keeps a belt from a GSR on his shop wall to show his
customers. It looks brand new, except for the ends where it broke.

My 98 Integra is due for a new belt (overdue, actually)
My question is - how hard a job is this?
I plan to do it myself, just need to knw if I should plan a Thursday night
in the garage, or a whole weekend.
Do I need to raise/lower the engine, disconnect mounts, or the like - or is
it just a matter of "remove covers, replace belt"?

For your first time, plan on the whole weekend.

Don't you have a shop manual? If not, get one.

If the engine was out of the car on a stand, you could do the job in
an hour. Unfortunately, as is the case with almost all cars these
days, the bodywork is wrapped around the engine so closely you can
hardly get at anything.

The first big problem will be undoing the bolt that holds the pulley
onto the crankshaft. That sucker is on there tight, and I mean REAL
tight. If you don't have an impact wrench handy you're going to need
a tommy bar with a long handle, and you'll have problems keeping the
engine from turning as you try to break the bolt free.

If you have never done it to a Honda before, plan for a weekend.

> Do I need to raise/lower the engine, disconnect mounts,

Yes. Btw - do you have the tool (or some other viable plan) to hold the
crank pulley in place while loosening the bolt?

It can be tough if you've never done one before. I did one and
documented it. See http://timingbelt.soben.com

If you've never done it before, plan an entire weekend. You should
also plan to have help, the factory service manual, and a 1/2" Impact
Gun, the crankshaft pulley holder, and a camshaft holder or pins that
fit to prevent movement in the camshafts.

You'll need to remove atleast ONE, probably two mounts. 2 makes the
job easier. Plan to support the engine and have a piece of wood
between your jack and engine.
