I don't know a whole lot about this, so hoping you guys can give me
some opinions. I went around town yesterday and were given the choices below. I'm a fairly cautious driver so I'm not concernred about 160km/hr speed ratings, etc. The figures below are for the rubber only, includes mounting/changing/balancing, etc. No steel rims. All 205/55/16. Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice - $702 installed Yokohama AVS - $916 installed, - $40 mail in rebate = $876 Hankook Ice Bear - $681 installed Nokian Hakkapeliitta Q - $985 installed Are the Nokian's really that good, eg; worth 30% more than say the Hankook, etc? |

I live in the interior of British Columbia. Not quite the market that
Toronto is, so not a whole lot of competition. :-( I'm just looking for dedicated winters so something good for ice/snow, couldn't care lessa bout 160km/hr speed ratings and such as my average speed since our dump last night is about 35km/hr. About a month ago I got a set of the Nokian Hakka' Q's
installed on my WRX wagon. So far I am very impressed with the ice and snow performance. Can't say anything about the other tires. I've heard that the Nokians are second best only to a new set of Blizzaks, and will out perform Blizzaks when both tires are into the second winter. We'll see about that. I got mine (205/55/16 91Q) for just under $ 900.00 (GST + PST included), from KalTire in Regina, SK. I bought a set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta 1's for my daughters car (1985 Mercury Lyxn wagon, FWD). Last winter was her first time driving in the snow. She never had a problem. Best snow tire I've ever drove on. My son would come home and say how bad the roads were (1998 Ford Explorer 4x4 with new BFGoodrich AT's)and she'd come home from school and say they weren't bad at all. They worked so good we were afaid she would be over cofident driving in snow and ice. She never got stuck or slid of the road. I bought them from Jack Williams Tire in Pennsylvania. Paid $63us, mounted balanced, out the door. Size was 185/70R13. Your size comes up as 205/55R16 . I checked on 225/60R16 for my Dad and they were $139.95us. They would probably ship them to you UPS. They now have a new Hakkapeliitta 2 winter tire, they call it the "King of Snow Tires" Both of these tires can be studded. Send me an email if you need more info. |

I bought one to replace a sidewall puncture and it was mounted and balanced for $115 CDN + GST at Kal Tire in Sherwood Park, Alberta. They are 195/65-R14, as I like a narrower tire in the winter.
