Default AC Unit

I have a general car question about air-conditioner. I have an Acura EL w/
AC. Whenever it is cold & damp outside, I have to turn on the AC to defog
the windows. Turning on the heat won't work. On my other non-AC cars,
turning on the heat works fine.

Does anyone knows why? Thanks in advance.

Your A/C system is likely designed by a company by the name NipponDenso, or Denso USA. Their systems do not readily allow heated airflow except through the footwell outlets. You can sometimes overcome the problem by turning the heat up exceedingly high, Max heat, to initially remove the condensation and then retard it as it becomes too discomforting.

Almost ALL modern day automotive A/C systems, including those ny Denso, completely disable the A/C compressor below about 35F OAT. Below these temperatures you MUST rely on heating only.

With the outside temperature range of 35F to say, 55F, the ability of the A/C to efficiently dehumidify the fresh incoming airflow, and thereby help defog the windshield, can be marginal at best and non-existent at worse.

Keeping the interior surface of the windshield warmed and therefore above the dewpoint of the cabin atmosphere will ALWAYS be the best way to prevent, and remove, windshield fogging.

In the wintertime we should always use the fresh airflow system mode to keep cabin humidity at its lowest, and even lower a rear window temporarily to help lower the humidity accummulated through various sources if the windshield tends to fog up.
