My daughters both have Acura Integras (GS). One is a 94, the other a
95. The mileages are 50k and 60k. On both the ABS lights have come on. They have both been told that the ABS system has failed and need replacemnt at around $1800 ea. OUCH. Is this commonplace? Does this sound right? any advice appreciated. John BTW, both have had a rattle inside the left rear door since new. Doesn't seem to bother the girls, but it would drive me nuts. The dealer has not be able to hear this most obvious noise. |

Fairly common. There are several failure modes. If there fluid is
disappearing from the ABS reservoir, you just have to replace the leaky seals. If the fluid is still up, you can try changing all the fluid (both the main system and the ABS reservoirs), exercise them a few times (invoke the ABS on a dirt road or something) and see if the systems start working. Otherwise that's about the right price. Fortunately, the main brakes are not adversely affected by the ABS going out. You can just pull the fuse to the ABS and the car will behave with full braking power as if it didn't have the ABS option. For $3600 you can probably find a pretty good school for the girls on how to pulse the brakes themselves if they ever lock them up.
