I have a question for Acura god or any other savvy Acura owner: After
noting a pulsation when braking from high speed, I checked with my
dealer and he determined I needed new front brake pads and rotor
smoothing. I have only 24k miles on this TL and although they did
cover this under warranty it seems that that is way too soon for it to
normal. Is that correct and, if so, is there some ongoing problems
with the brakes on the TL that I should be concerned about. Thanks
for any help with this. Everything else is great with the car and my
dealer is always helpful, but he stonewalled a bit when I asked him
whether Acuras have a problem with brakes. BTW, I am a very
conservative driver!

There is a service bulletin that advises to replace the pads along with
maching the rotors. It also has the rear rotors machined and pads replaced
if the vehicle warrants this. Acura only recommends rotor machining done by
an on-car lathe. This is the best way to refinish the rotors. As I stated
earlier, pad replacement was done because the bulletin requires it not
because the pads were worn out. The TL model does seem to be more prone to
rotor warpage as does the CL. It is strange because the rotors are pretty
good size. Must be inferior material or something. I would venture to say
that at my shop we do at least 1-2 rotor machineing jobs per day and we only
have 5 techs. Well, 4 techs and 1 Acura God!!

I had the same problem. At free-way speeds.....if I pressed the
brakes...the streering wheel would shimmy (shake). I just replaced the
brakes a few months ago and had the rotors turned though! Turned out the
stock rotors on Acuras....at least the TLs, are crap. They are very
suseptable to warping. Basically if your rotors are hot and they quickly
cool (mainly from water from like a car wash or driving through a
puddle..etc), it could warp the rotors. Acura wanted $175 to replace the
(brand new) front breaks and turn the rotors. I just took my car down to a
shop that turned them for me for $30/rotor. It was so expensive because
Acura/Honda say you *SHOULD* turn the rotors on the vehicle as opposed to
pulling them off and taking them anywhere to do it for $5/rotor. Either
way, $60 fixed my problem. Good luck finding a shop besides the acura
dealer that has a machine to turn rotors on the vehicle. I had to drive 3
cities over to a Midas shop. The Midas Muffler shops were the only ones
that had the special machineing tool. Hope this helps!

normally, a shop takes them over to the honda/acura
dealer to have them machined anyway. as acura god
will tell ya it's expensive to own an on-car lathe.

I watched Midas do it. They guy was sooo proud of his "$10k Lathe" that he

I have a 2000 3.2TL that currently has 77K miles on it and have had 3 break
jobs on it already.
Yes, there has been a problem with Acura breaks, actually, its been the
rotors which can warp very easily. Mine have been "turned" 2 times already
at each break job. Guess, the next time will require new rotors of which I
think that they run about $150.00 each.

Damn. I have a '99 TL with 43k miles on it, and I haven't had to replace any
brake parts yet. Well, tomorrow I will have to, because I said that.
