Default Which is better, the Lexus RX 350 or the new Acura MDX?

I am trying to decide between the two cars.

It depends on what you're looking for. Both are great luxury SUVs. The main differences are:

The RX seats 5 people. The MDX has a third-row seat that can technically seat 7. However, the third row is small, so it'll be comfortable only for kids or very tiny adults. If the third-row is important to you, this alone eliminates the RX.

The RX is slightly smaller than the MDX. The MDX is three-inches longer and a fairly significant six-inches wider.

The RX is currently in its 5th year of the current design. This usually means that most of the bugs have been worked out and the reliability of the design is fairly proven. The MDX is in the first year of it's current design, introduced for the 2007 model year. While there's no reason to believe the MDX will be less reliable, brand new designs usually carry some uncertainty until proven.

The trade-off for the RX being in its 5th year is that it's soon to be redesigned. If you're someone who can't stand buying a car and seeing a redesigned model the next year, you may want to wait.

The next generation RX is expected to be bolder in design with a boost in luxury and sport characteristics. An extended length version is also expected, which will provide room for a third-row seat like the MDX. The new model is expected in the spring of 2008.

Utility

There's no obvious winner between the Lexus and the MDX in terms of transporting cargo. Drivers with frequent child-duty might favor the Acura over the Lexus RX 350. Towing is markedly more the Acura MDX's forte than it is the Lexus RX 350's.

Dimensions

The Acura MDX is a little heavier than the Lexus. The Lexus RX 350's tank is roughly the same size as the Acura's, though the Acura MDX's is a tad bigger. The Lexus RX 350 and the MDX compete for the same parking spaces.

Convenience

You'll most definitely take the Acura MDX for a fill-up roughly as often as the Lexus RX 350.

Cost

The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the dealer. It costs roughly the same to get the Acura MDX to the dealership as the Lexus RX 350. The Acura MDX doesn't pale in comparison to the RX 350 regarding fuel economy. There isn't much of a difference in gas mileage here, but if you must know, the Lexus RX 350 is a tad more economical than the Acura MDX. With respect to MSRP, the Acura costs approximately as much as the Lexus (though the Lexus is a bit cheaper). The Acura isn't much less costly than the Lexus as far as final cost.

Handling

The MDX and the RX 350 have roughly similar tires. With their comparable turning circles, the Lexus RX 350 and the Acura MDX indubitably handle about the same into and out of tight spots.

Drivetrain

The Acura MDX has no lessons to learn as far as torque from the Lexus RX 350.

Comfort

While the front cabin in the Lexus offers a bit more head room than the Acura MDX, there honestly isn't much of a difference. While the rear of the Acura MDX offers a bit more head- and leg-room than the Lexus RX 350, there really isn't much of a difference.

Overview

The Lexus RX 350 and the Acura MDX have the same basic after-sale protection.
