Should I buy a 97 Acura CL that has 290K miles on it? The owner says that those are 95% highway miles since he travels out of state weekly. He is selling it for $1500 and he says it is in excellent condition. It would be my first car and I want it to last me at least a year without having to replace expensive parts (engine, transmission, etc). I don't know much about cars, so can you help? Thanks!

No, highway miles or not 290 is ALOT. even for a Honda engine which are well known for their quality and long life. I would offer him no more than a grand and be really sure to have someone experienced check under the hood.I would check the oil cap, if it is clean on the underside that's a good sign, and also look at the general cleanliness of the engine. if its "too clean" also be worried because that likely means the owner is trying to hide something. hope this all helps
