Default 96 Acura Integra too high RPM's due to not shifting gears right.?

It's an automatic. It's killing me on gas mileage. My bf is good with cars but is not a transmission guy. He can pull 'em and put 'em back in, but not fix them. He said that the RPM's are way higher than they should be because it is not shifting into one of the gears (1st? can't remember). Is there an easy/inexpensive way to fix this?We checked and it does have fluid. The RPM's are get upwards of 3 just on regular street driving. I'll make sure with my bf and edit this if I'm wrong, but I think that's what it was. He knows they shouldn't be as high as they get, I've seen the needle go way over 3 (or 4?)on freeway.

It can be something as simple as a sticky valve. Go to any auto parts store and buy a can of transmission conditioner. If it's sticky valve. the transmission conditioner will free it up.

if the fluid is clean and filled then there are a few things u can do......first u can buy a case of honda trans fuild and do a flush, if unsure how ask a honda tech, second if that doesn't work, go buy some lucas trans fluid, third thing, the shift selenoids on the front for the trans could be bad, if none of the above work u need a new trans
