Changing your transmission fluid won't hurt it. ATF changes are the best way to prolong the life of your transmission. Don't even think about overhauling your transmission before you try this. It's cheap and easy. If your ATF is black and burnt it needs to be changed ASAP. Make sure you use the Honda ATF Z1 it is available at Carquest and Honda dealerships. It is special and its made different than Dexron. Honda transmissions are special. Also, you might want to add some Lubeguard ATF protectant. It's an additive, the only place I have seen it at is Carquest. This is also the only ATF additive that is actually approved and used by many dealerships nationwide. I used it to help my jerky transmission and it helped a lot. It's been proven to help prolong transmission life and keep the seals in good condition.

you are supposed to drain and fill the tranny fluid every year or 20K miles, whichever comes first and make sure you use factory honda fluids. you probably have a bad tranny due to the honda recall and you should check that out too. changing the fluid could cause more problems to your tranny which is obviously not in good shape. by leaving the old fluid in, it contains particles that actually help your tranny keep going, but will damage it even further - it's like prolonging the inevitable.

Your wasting your time and money changing the fluid now, the tranny is done. The warranty extension on these transmissions was for 7yrs 9months or 109 k whichever comes first, so it's not going to help you. If the rest of the car is in decent shape you can get a reman trans at the dealer or try used, you might get lucky and find a used reman at the boneyard.

Time for a new transmission. The 1999-2003 TLs have a well- known transmission problem. Get a remanufactured, new tranny. Don't buy a used one unless you can verify that the transmission is a post 3/2005 model. The earlier tranny replacements were just a newer unit of the faulty on- meaning it will fail again.
