I was at a red light and the brake pedal just went down. Then I heard some kind of air sound coming from under the pedal when I pressed... I took it to the shop.... what do you think the problem is....The mechanic said he had to change both the front rotors, brake pads, and a caliper and a hose... he said only after he did this would he be able to know if the master cylinder needs replacing or not.... WHat do you think... is this an honest mechanic... thanks again...Alex, nyc

a mechanic with no brains.. if the pedal goes down to the floor, you either have leaky wheel cylinders (but the legend has 4 wheel disc brakes), a leaking brake hose, OR a bad master cylinder.the seals inside the master cylinder are simply worn out and fluid is getting bypassed. It's just age.. nothing unusual.Find a new mechanic.. this one wants to take you for your money.

No that sounds retarded. The symptom you described is obviously a failed master cylinder, a brake system leak, or a failed brake booster. It has nothing to do with the rotors, pads, or calipers. Unless those items are all worn they do not need to be replaced in order to "diagnose" a separate problem.

MY reply is no he is not "honest"& he needs help..He obviously, does not know that the "ABS"&"SRS" system on an Accura should only be done by a Honda dealer, because they are dangerous if not done properly. There is over 3000 psi in the braking system.. Sounds like your pedal seal has collapsed, nothing to do with rotors,or pads,or calipers,or hoses, just a simple rubber seal that's failed.Don't know your mileage, but sounds like its high.. I myself have had three of these beasts,Luv them all.Still have 2002 Accura gold badge, with 217146Kl-ms on the clock. What i have done is,if i still got it after 5 yrs,i get brake fluid drained & replenished & the master cylinder checked, costs around $80 dollars, includes new seals etc if required..Cheap preventive maintenance.. Take it away from this cowboy..Good luck.Stay well & enjoy your motoring..
