I don't personally own one, but a good friend of mine has a 2002 Tl Type S and he's on his third transmission. Which model are you considering, the regular 225 hp TL or the more powerful 260 hp TL type s? From what I understand the transmission problems apply mostly to the type S model because Acura increased the size of the base engine (to 260 hp) without modifying the transmission to accommodate the power increase. It is not uncommon for owners to be one their second or third transmission. Such a shame, because it was an excellent car in every other respect!

All FWD V6 Honda's had the same trashy automatic transmission that was recalled year after year. Honda wouldn't admit there was a problem and never fixed it. Even after the recall "fixed" them there was no improvement. If you get more than 15k miles out of the automatic transmission consider yourself lucky. The manual transmissions had some major torque steer problems but were reliable. Other than that its a nice car.

They are the most reliable luxury make. They say they have transmission problems because Acura is owned by Honda and the 98-2002 Honda Accord had transmission problems, which was fixed with a recall by Honda. This fix is free since it is a recall. Many people think that all Honda's and Acura's get transmission problems just because of the 98-02 Honda Accords. But they are very reliable and you will not have transmission problems with anything made by Honda/Acura unless you buy a 98-02 Accord that was not fixed with the recall.

I have an 01 (not type S). All the TLs (and CLs) made between 00 and 03 have serious transmission problems. They were never recalled, but the warranty was extended on them. However that warranty is expired and you'll be on your own when your $4000 transmission fails (notice I said when and not if). Many of the transmissions were rplaced with reapired ones, not "fixed" ones - meaning they didn't correct the design flaw. Supposedly those replaced after Jan 05 received the fixed design flaw transmission, but I'm not so sure. I've replaced the trans on mine in 06 under warranty, but I still feel like I'm living on borrowed time.Read some of these http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/acura/tl/ especially the ones for the 02 TL - which is exactly the same as the 03.

i have owned an 2003 Acura TL for 6 years. the transmission has not been a problem for me at all. the car is excellent for anyone who wants a reliable vehicle with lots of basic add-ons. the only problems i had were with the CD player not reading some disks but its not a big deal. This car has excellent power for a FWD car, 225 hp you will find is plenty for any hard acceleration. the sequential sportshift is very responsive and i use it almost always to get quicker shifts. the car has good handling with some understeer at low speeds, but it is excellent when it comes to responsiveness. however, the steering can feel a little numb at times.on the interior, the basic sound system is a beauty. the 5 speaker BOSE system is one of the best i have ever heard. it sounds better than most 8-12 speaker set ups in newer luxury cars. the gauges are easy to read and the radio and HVAC controls are large and easy to use.Overall, this car is an excellent bargain. i have driven in similar 3 series and Lexus ES from the same year, and the acura blows both of them out of the water, while costing much less at the same time. this vehicle is an excellent choice for anyone wanting to look stylish and have performance that wont embarass

The transmission is not necessarily a problem but is the weak link in a great car. There is a notice but not a recall. My automatic had been not shifting correctly in and out of reverse. After 3 yrs of complaining and dealer checking, it seems to be okay now. My CL-S manual had the supposedly beefy transmission replaced. I was at low speed 20 mph when a part was ejected through the transmission case making a hole the size of a quarter. Dealer said that many automatics had problems but this was the first manual he had replaced...it's the same 6 speed used in the MDX manual model. All work was covered by warranty on both cars.I would definitely have a good transmission shop check out your prospective purchase before buying it.
