Default 99 Acura CL 3.0 Check Engine

I recently bought this car for my son and the CE light came on today - about 3 hours after he got gas. he didn't "click" the cap, so I am hoping that is all it is. But isn't there a way to display the diag code without going to a mechanic? I was able to do it with my Durango by turning the ignition 3 times and clicking my heels (just kidding about the heels) then the code would display on the digital mileage.
Does anyone know the way to do it with this model?
