stock engages at 51 and it could be in any gear. you can tell its engaged when the motor starts to work harder and you can hear it become more louder. when vtec kicks in you can also feel the kick in it its primaries then secondaries

VTEC is independent of the gear you are in i.e you can engage it in ANY gear. If your car is stock it will engage at 5600 RPM. (for 02-04 models VTEC engages at 5800 RPM)If you get a Hondata reflash it will engage at 4800 RPM at wide open throttle and 5200 at partially open throttle.K-Pro will allow you to change that to as low as 2200 RPM.
