you should keep in mind that the price of the car is not all that you have to pay for (tax, insurance, maintenance, etc). chances are that for a car that old it will have more problems than just burning oil. if you're not prepared to pay more than $700 if it does break down, i say forget it.

First, you might ask yourself why you want to buy a car that obviously has a problem! If it is burning that much oil so quickly you might suspect a major engine problem. Go online to find the blue book value of the car - in poor condition. Then, figure it will take at least $1000 to take the head off the engine and replace the rings -- if that is the problem. If you have a cracked cylinder head or a cracked or broken piston, double it! If you are looking for a car, be prepared to take it in and have it thoroughly checked by a reputable mechanic. That may cost anywhere from $75 - 100 dollars. But, at least you will know whether or not it is mechanically sound. And, it should pass a safety inspection. Personally, I'd pass on your friend's car - sounds like a "lemon"! Oh, you can also go to carfax.com and check on the car - you'll need the VIN number of the car to do so! Any car you consider - go to carfax.com and check on it. Good luck....

No, if it burns oil that fast it probably needs more than $700 worth of repairs.
