I have a 97 prelude. The vtec automatically kicks in at 5200 RPM.

(Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) im pretty sure you are refering to. Well, it is has a sensor and is also an automatic process honda has manufactured inside there modern engine to increase fuel efficiency and power at an optimal range. Since The Vtec is electronically controlled, the ecu tells the engine to switch from the low lift to the high lift cam lobes when the conditions mean that engine output will be improved.

VTEC will automaticly kick in once it reaches the RPM at which it kicks in, it does have a sensor that monitors it so it can safely engage

You're a little vague on the details. There are a lot of what ifs.It is as someone said a question of the ECU -- you may not have a match. It depends on which engine and which ECU. So the first thing is to make that your ECU and harness are good to go with this engine. The ECU governs all sorts of stuff including VTEC show, but whether you've got a match or not, if you're doing this right, you will have also done the work inside the engine and you're going to need someone to tune it and at a minimum reflash the ECU. You can get by without some things, but if you wanna be fly, got to do it all.I like the temple of VTEC which is a good source place. You might also want to check the H22 Intera swap that puts the engine somewhere else. The guy's got a stack of pictures of it. . The guy has a load of pictures on the conversion which looks absolutely straight. Gave you two links, but all are worthwhile for a swap artist. There's another general piece about Integra swaps, but givn I don't know exactly what you're putting together, it mayhave no application.

All them answer were good but not all the way true. On any honda vtec engine theres an vtec solenoid. When the right amount of OIL PRESSURE builds up the solenoid sends an signal to the ECU to engage the secondary cam lobes.
