I own a 99 acura tl and when i drive the vehicle at a higher speed like around 40 and above, it starts to make a humming noise like if it is coming from the muffler. The noise increases with speed but when the vehicle's front wheels are at a left angle like i am softly turning towards left in the highway or changing lane to the left , the noise stops for a little bit and starts back up as i proceed straight again. some one told me it's the bearing and i kind of believe him though i am not a mechanic, i seek help!!!?

Sure sounds like a front wheel bearing. But this is a front wheel drive car, so you have the issue of CV shafts as a possible cause, too. This is not a hard problem for a mechanic to diagnose. To replace a bad wheel bearing and repack the others (fill with fresh grease and adjust running play) is about an hour of labor and $40 to $60 in parts. CV joints could be substantially more, perhaps $200 - $400, depending on what is worn, and how much labor is involved.Don't just keep driving it. If it is a wheel bearing, it can seize at speed, ruining other parts, and perhaps making the car difficult to control.

Things that make you say hmmm... it could the bearings fairly staight foward maintenance. But you say humming is it a low pitch, if so it could be brake pads need replaced. If it's a high pitch more likely to be the bearings. Can't be much more help than that, here are a couple of online sites if you have to be your own mechanic.www.rightautos.com AutoRepairManuals.biz

I have this exact issue! The sound was coming from the right front tire and my mechanic instantly thought bearing as I described the noise and the way that noise decreased as I turned right. When turning left the noise increased. He replaced the right front bearing and I needed new front break pads.
But I still seem to have the humm (minus the slight metal scraping noise which I assume was the breaks). Did you get the problem fixed? And if so, what was the diagnoses? Thanks! Jeff |
