Default 98 Integra LS Starter Jams

Hi, my daughter has a 98 Integra LS. Last week, she went to start the engine, it intially turned over, but the starter stopped turning with a loud clunk ....

When turning the key, you could hear the solenoid kick in, but the starter didn't turn. We put the car in 5th gear and rocked it back and fro until the engine could be seen to rotate ... once the engine had rotated a few degrees, turning the key caused the starter to start turning, but will quickly stop with a loud clunk.

I hoped it was the starter, and have replaced it with a reman unit ... just the same result.

I have taken the plugs out and you can rotate the engine using the bolt on the a/c pump, and this will allow the starter to turn, but it still seems to jam with a clunking sound ... anyone know of ring gear problems on this engine?

Any thoughts? Thanks
