Look in the owners manual. Unless it specifies premium fuel is required, there is absolutely no reason to use it.

You MUST use premium. The car was built and tuned for premium fuel. If you choose not to use it the engine will start to knock.

Premium. The gas cap says the type of gas to use and it says premium. If it says recommended under it, then you can use any gas, but premium for the most performance.

The manual says premium, so you can get the most performance out of the engine. But I never felt the TL was built for performance, so I never put premium in it, always 89 octane, now that it's winter, and gas prices are insane, I put 87 octane. Yes I know it's bad for the car, but screw it.

These are all great answers -why do I see so many "thumbs down" signs????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????If its like my Acura Legend then "premium" means 91 octane or higher.

Premium. The TL (Honda J32A3 engine) runs at 11:1 compression...that's really high. You run the risk of 'detonation' / ping / knock when you run regular fuel. So the manufacturer employs an engine 'knock' sensor that detects detonation (i.e., premature ignition in the cylinder head before the piston has reached near the very top of its travel). It then retards the ignition timing, which in turn reduces the power output of the motor, and also on the longterm results in added carbon buildup within the cylinder heads & tops of the pistons. Eventually these buildups result in 'hot spots', that will further erode your car's performance. An occasional tank of 'regular' gas won't harm your car, but Honda engineered their Acura TL to run on Premium (91 octane or better).
