The LS, RS, and GS trim levels all had the b18a non-vtec 1834 cc inline-4. it was good for 140 bhp and 123 lb/ft. The GS-R trim had the b18c-1 1797cc inline-4 vtec with an advertised rating of 128 lb/ft and 170bhp. I say advertised because it is known that they were more like 178. Honda dropped the rating in the U.S. market for insurance reasons. Even so, it was still the hottest hatch of it's day. Very few cars even today make 100 hp/liter without boost.

Ok so the RS, LS, SE and GS all use the same B18B1 non-VTEC motor. It's a 1.8L (thats why they call it a B18) or in exact, 1.797L. It outputs 142hp @ 6300RPM.The GS-R (Si-R) uses a B18C1 DOHC VTEC motor; 170hp @ 7600RPM.And then the Type-R motor uses a B18C5 DOHC VTEC motor; 195hp @ 8000RPM.The redline on the RS, LS, SE and GS is 7000GS-R = 8000Type-R = 8200
