tiptronic or a sportshift depends on the maker. By the way the new Acura's 07 and up you can control all the way to red line and then it will automatically cut out but it will not shift you have to do it all by yourself the only time it adjusts for you is if you come to a stop then it will go back to first so HondaB you are wrong in this part of your answer.

If I remember correctly it is called a semi-automatic because it is half and half. That is the name that I heard to be used for a car like the one that you describe.

Seems each company has a diff name for its systems.triptronic is a registered trademark, and it is owned by German sports car maker Porsche, who licenses it for use by others such as Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda.Other manufacturers use Tiptronic-like systems under different names: * Acura: Sequential SportShift * Alfa Romeo: Sportronic, Q-Tronic * Aston Martin: Touchtronic * Audi: Tiptronic, Multitronic (CVT) * BMW: Steptronic * Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep: AutoStick * Citroën: Sensodrive * Ford (Australia): Sequential Sports Shift * Honda: iShift, S-matic, MultiMatic * Hyundai: Shiftronic, HIVEC H-Matic * Infiniti: Manual Shift Mode * Jaguar: Bosch® Mechatronic * Lancia: Comfortronic * Land Rover: CommandShift * Lexus: E-Shift * Mazda: Sport AT * Mercedes-Benz: TouchShift * MG-Rover: Steptronic * Mitsubishi: INVECS, INVECS II, Sportronic, Tiptronic * Nissan: Tiptronic * Opel/Vauxhall: Easytronic * Peugeot: 2Tronic * Pontiac: TAPshift * Saab : Sentronic * Subaru: Sportshift (system developed and name used under license from Prodrive Ltd.) * Smart : Softip * Volkswagen : Tiptronic * Volvo: GeartronicSemi automatic * Quickshift - Renault * 2-tronic - Peugeot * Allshift, Twin Clutch SST - Mitsubishi * Easytronic - Opel * Durashift EST - Ford * Dualogic - Fiat * MultiMode, SMT (Semi Manual Transmission) - Toyota * i-SHIFT - Honda * SensoDrive/EGS - Citroën * Speedgear - Fiat * Selespeed - Alfa Romeo, Fiat * Softouch - smart * Sportronic - Mitsubishi * Duo Select - Maserati * Automatic Stickshift - Volkswagen * Sequentronic - Mercedes-Benz * SMG/SSG - BMW * S-Tronic - Audi * DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) - SEAT, Skoda Auto, Volkswagen * DCT - Volkswagen, Bugatti, Koenigsegg * PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplungen) - Porsche

Acura calls it Sequential SportShift, but it's still just an automatic transmission just like all other automatics. The shifter lever isn't connected to the transmission by linkages or cables, it's all electronic so shifting in SportShift is the same as moving the shifter through the gears like a normal auto tranny. The thing I don't like about my CLS is that in SportShift, it automatically shifts from 1st to 2nd. There's no way to keep it in 1st unless I take it out of SS and manually shift it down to 1st similar to any other auto. Also when slowing down in SS mode, it will automatically downshift by itself, just like a regular auto tranny. If I'm in 5th and I come to a stop, i don't have to down shift or anything, just step on the brake. If you're familiar to the V8 performance parts of the 70' and early 80's, B&M and Hurst had a "Dual Mode Shifter". It did the same thing 30 years ago.

A 5 speed automatic transmission with Sport Shift is what Acura calls it. Other companies have their own names for it.
