Default why did Acura stop making the NSX?

i thought they had a good thing going for them. they had the only true sports car from japan and they go and stop making it. i've heard rumors that they're bringing it back in a few years, but why did they stop?

Lack of sales. They couldn't justify continued production.

I think it was a great car, ahead of its time and produced for many years with (criminally) not much spent on development.I guess people with that much to spend really wanted a Porsche or Ferrari or so on; it was too much for the 'Z car' brigade of today but didn't have the cachet of the European brands. My wild idea is that somebody (and Honda could do it) should produce a modern version of the Ferrari 250GT. Something like a Z car, except with more class and sophistication. A 3 litre V12 would be nice even today

As a 'hardcore' Honda & Acura 'nut', I try to keep up on the various blogs & sites (e.g., Acurazine & Temple of VTEC). I might recommend both to you, they are the definitive source for answers to the kind of question you asked, and to a lot more...Essentially Honda stopped production of their NSX for two reasons:1. The engine had not been updated to where it could pass ever stringent emission control standards.2. Honda just wasn't selling enough of them to make the venture worthwhile. The car was hand-built, meaning they could not enjoy economies of scale in production...that kept the price high. Related to #2, IMO, the general (but errant) perception is that if a car is not imbued with gobs of horsepower, then it's not worthy of 'supercar' status. The NSX however still proves that's it's a supercar as it lives on on the racing circuit. And there are enough NSXes out there running with both superchargers & turbochargers, cranking out well over 500 hp...still winning races against newer competitors. In any event, the mid-engine NSX rightfully reigns among a class of first-rate sports cars...among the best ever produced. It is superbly balanced, handles great, accelerates very well (4.7 sec 0-60 with it's normally aspirated 3.2L DOHC V6), and brakes well too. Moreover, it's quite robust as one would expect for a Honda. It's also sedate around town, but lively on the track...a distinctive of Honda design that runs true across their lineup of vehicles. Even though the NSX became a bit dated (introduced in '92, and still ran in near orginal iteration when discontinued ~ '05), it featured numerous innovative features...some of which are only recently trickling down across the breadth of the automotive market (Honda licenses its technologies to folks like Toyota, etc.):- Variable valve timing, also employing a secondary, high lift cam (among first production VTEC engine produced)- Programmable Fuel Injection system, employing an algorithm to optimize engine performance- superb flow through the engine- Variable Volume Induction, (VVI), creating mild supercharge effect at the lower RPMs- Use of titanium in critical engine components- Ground effects aerodynamics to the chassis for enhanced high speed handling- Highest output/displacement in its class for the early '90s era (Honda motors still excel in this area, note S2000 engine's output)Honda's CEO has announced a successor to the NSX. Actually, Honda was to have already released it, but it's still delayed do to enginering issues relative to it's basic design. Speculations abound...allegedly Honda claims it will outfit the new NSX with a V10 motor, however, Honda has a way of surprising the masses...who knows just what the next NSX will really be like. One thing though...whatever form it takes, it WILL be a supercar, and it will embody numerous innovations that Honda continues to be known the world over for... ''Honda, the Power of Dreams''

Snookynibbles has it dead on. The NSX as with the future to come redesign on the RL are what we call status cars. They are not meant to be profitable as much as draw high end buyers to the brand and give the brand some credibility. Honda has a tendency to try to thumb their noses at the Germans and in the case of this car and the S2000 at the Italians. The Chairman of Honda has said this was to show the world that Honda could make a car that exceede a Ferrari for less money and it be reliable. There are so many opinions that differ on weather the car met those standards but one thing for sure Acura was on the map as a manufacterer for all types of car buyers. In the last few years that has gotten off track but in the next few years you will see Acura return to it's roots. A new NSX is in the works at a quarterly meeting it was announced by 2010 or 2011 the new NSX would be ready, and a new SUV with a deisel engine as well as a full size luxury sedan with a V8. The NSX is due to have a V10 ( 5.0 litre 550hp) that Honda has developed the problem was the Chairman did not like the GT style of design as the NSX has always been a mid engine car so they scrapped the design and started fresh in the New Acura design studio in California. The old NSX just got outdated and yes it was expensive and not a big money maker. I noticed a new NSX sold last month on the monthly statement, the new one will be in the same 100K price range and will be SHAWD so it should be incredible! Porsche watch out!

Simple answer, is they didnt sell much. Also the NSX was underpowered for a $80,000+ price tag that is what really killed it, but handles great. Now you can buy a used one in good condition for under $35,000. Check NSXprime.com

They never bothered to update it. It was great when he came out but so many cars passed it over its lifetime that the sales weren't great. Its hard to justify a high price to build it with such a low volume.

They stopped because it was in the exact price range of cars that were more prestigious that an Acura. When you told people that you had a $90000 Acura, they think straight to Honda. People had stopped buying it and Acura started making it special order. It finally came to a Halt in 2004. There is a concept NSX out right now, but Honda is not sure if it will sell and they do not want to make the same mistake they did with the last one by selling it..
