For $30k you can get a lot of cars.I'll ignore the Sports Compact criteria and focus on performance or performance potential for $30k and less. The new Civic Si or Acura CSX are very nice ... I've always liked the WRX for its performance but I would get the 2005 or 2006 one. The new model doesn't interest me that much.A 2001 M3 is in your price range if you want serious performance. But try to get one with the warranty replaced engine. The Mustang GT is in your price range as well and the potential there is huge. You'll need to put in $5k to upgrade the rear suspension to dial down the oversteer, but that's a cheap price to pay for the performance.I also like the RX8 - a 2004 is in your price range. Same with a 2002 Boxster.Good luck.

You can get alot of cars for under 30k man. If you want the car to be sporty and compact I suggest you getting an Acura/Honda RSX-S or import one from Japan known as a Honda Integra Type-R. It's around 23k, but if you import it youll have to pay for shipping and all that. Also, you can get the new 07' Civic Si. It's almost like the RSX-S with the same K20A engine. Or an older, but rare car, the Acura/Honda Integra Type-R, im sure youll be able to find one for around 19-23k. Or go withb the Honda S2000. It's really sport compact and can hold only 2 people. But really...dont wait for the new STI. The current ones are already ugly because the front end. If your gunna go with a Subaru Imprezza WRX STI, go with the 05.

this is pushing the price envelope a little bit but bang for buck a Mitsubishi Evolution IX RS. You can buy it used for a little cheaper. It is just really fast. You could pick up a VIII for mid 20's in really nice condition. All wheel drive, 276hp, years of rally heritage. Low 13's on the 1320 and high 9's on the skidpad. Brembos, turbocharged, recaros. You can't get anything better for the price. The next best option would be a subaru wrx, sti if you can afford it, but the new wrx's work quite well.
